The Ingathering
Oil on canvas
72 x 48 inches

I begin each day with the morning prayers. I envisioned this painting while reciting a particular section of the amidah:

‎“תקע בשופר גדול לחרותנו, ושא נס לקבץ גליותינו וקבצנו יחד מארבע כנפות הארץ. ברוך אתה ה׳ מקבץ נדחי עמו ישראל

Sound the great shofar for our freedom, raise the banner to gather our exiles and gather us together from the four corners of the earth. Hashem is the source of all blessings who gathers in the dispersed of His people Israel.”

For centuries the Jewish people have been expelled from most every land in which they have tried to settle – starting with our own homeland, Israel. First forced out by the Babylonians and then again by the Romans. Wherever we have tried to make ourselves a home outside of the Land of Israel, we have been reminded that we are strangers in a strange land – wether it was during the Spanish Inquisition or, more recently, the Holocaust. With each reminder we pray and yearn for Moshiach to come, To gather us in and to bring us home! This painting depicts the Ingathering. Moshiach will come, blow the shofar, will gather in every Jew from the four corners of the earth. The Torah is made of 600,000 letters representing every Jew that stood at Mount Sinai. There is a Kabbalistic concept that each of the millions of Jews living today carry with them a spark of those original 600,000 neshamas. I chose to depict every Jew with letters made of 24kt gold. No matter how far removed one may be from Torah Judaism our neshamas are as pure as gold.
